With their analytical mind, they have suggested something to improve the quality and quantity of food to be taken. In fact, yogis have given food a little higher value than merely its food or chemical value their way of discriminating a diet was that of dividing the food into three categories based upon the end-results of the nutrients. The entire world is made up of three elements
Sattvic,
Rajasic and
Tamasic.
These three elements or attributes are called Gunas. They are found in all matter including our food. They affect the mind also.
WHAT IS SATTVIC FOOD? This type of food is natural and is therefore easily digestible. It generates energy and thus alertnessThis kind of food brings relaxation and a feeling ofpeace. One feels contented, happy and joyous. WHAT IS RAJASIC FOOD? This type of food is not easy to digest (is gaseous and produces more phlegm). Though this food may generate a lot of energy, it leaves one in a disturbed state of mind. It makes a person restless, aggressive, angry, anxious and irritated. Rajasic food can be consumed in extreme cold season or one is a heavy physical worker. WHAT IS TAMASIC FOOD? Stale food (kept for more than 24 hours) is Tamasic food, as also over the processed and frozen foodThis type of food is very difficult to digest (like Rajasic food it produces a lot of gas and phlegm) and gives no energy. After consuming it a person feels dull, inert lazy and lethargic. Following is a list of items under the Tamasic GunaTea, coffee, cocoa (drinking chocolate) liquor, allstimulants. White sugar, iodised salt Fine flour (maida), polished rice, bread, biscuits, chocolate processed food items like jams, sauces, soft drinks, pickles etc. Food containing artificial flavours, colours. Reheated food and deep fried food. SOME IMPORTANT POINTS It is better to have whole fruit rather than fruit juice When the fruit has chewed the saliva in the mouth helps in digestion and the fibre is retained Only a little Tamasic food should be eaten if it cannot be totally avoided. Ginger tea is good in winter or when the nose is blocked or when one is sneezing, but not every day Rajasic food is fine if the body is healthy. This food is appropriate for people who do more of physical activity. For people who use mental faculties like students, executives, scientists only Sattvik Diet is advisable . In today’s times, eggs are not advisable as hens are kept in closed and unhygienic environments a are given injections for better produce. This kind of environment produces a lot of negative emotions in them affecting the eggs. This, in turn, affects the human mind aggravating its already existing problems even the age of 20 to 30 years, one should drink skimmed milk. After the age of 30 years dilutes milk (1 part) with water (2 parts). This is especially so for people living in polluted cities where because of lack of fresh air and stressful conditions the digestive system is weak. Try to consume cow’s milk instead of buffalo milk. Restrict oil and ghee intake to 1 tablespoon of oil and 1 teaspoon of ghee in a day, especially after the age of 30. High-fat food is not only difficult to digest but also takes longer to digest.
